Woodside

A cabin-inspired remodel in the redwoods

This large home is nestled among redwoods in a mature Berkeley Hills neighborhood. More than anything, our renovation aimed to honor the natural setting and original mid-century modern character. We wanted to create a cozy, woodsy retreat at the edges of the city.

What we updated:

  • Restored the backyard deck to make the most of the woodsy setting, creating a treehouse vibe
  • Rebuilt the original spiral staircase into an elegant oak staircase that is safer and doubles as a focal point
  • Built a log stack next to the fireplace for easy firewood access and a modern cabin look
  • Created a bar nook between the living room and kitchen, ideal for entertaining
  • Cleaned up brush and trees for fire safety, including those on neighboring properties
  • Replaced windows with new tempered glass to align with fire safety requirements
  • Retained unique architectural details, including a double front door
