A mid-century modern makeover in the Oakland Hills

The quiet Oakland Hills are known for their gorgeous views of the San Francisco Bay—and this mid-century modern home was no exception. We wanted to do everything we could to maximize this home’s vistas, while also updating the space for livability.

What we updated:

  • Restructured interior to ensure the kitchen and family room had the best views of the San Francisco Bay
  • Fully rebuilt a large and crumbling back deck overlooking over the hills
  • Chose materials and upgrades to create a cohesive mid-century aesthetic—kitchen and bathroom furnishings, two-toned cabinets, and a bold front door
  • Turned a plain nook into a custom home bar, complete with open shelving and matching cabinetry that connects it to the kitchen
  • Cleared trees and brush from the home and neighboring property, removing a major fire hazard
